Menopause
Menopause is a natural biological process that occurs when a woman's ovaries gradually reduce the production of key reproductive hormones—primarily estrogen and progesterone. This decline leads to the end of menstrual cycles and fertility. Most women experience menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age in the United States being around 51. As the ovaries stop releasing eggs and hormone levels drop, menstruation ceases permanently.
The 3 Stages of Menopause
Perimenopause
Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause and can begin 8 to 10 years before menopause, typically in a woman’s 40s, though it may start earlier for some. During this stage, estrogen levels fluctuate and gradually decline, causing irregular menstrual cycles and various symptoms such as hot flashes, mood changes, and sleep disturbances. Although fertility decreases, pregnancy is still possible. Perimenopause usually lasts around 4 years but can vary from a few months to over a decade.

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder affecting women of reproductive age. It is characterized by a combination of symptoms that may include irregular or absent menstrual periods, elevated levels of androgens (male hormones), and the presence of multiple small cysts on the ovaries, visible on ultrasound. PCOS can lead to a range of complications, including difficulty with ovulation and fertility, weight gain, acne, and increased hair growth on the face and body (hirsutism). It is also associated with insulin resistance, which can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic conditions.
