Menopause

Menopause is a natural biological process that occurs when a woman's ovaries gradually reduce the production of key reproductive hormones—primarily estrogen and progesterone. This decline leads to the end of menstrual cycles and fertility. Most women experience menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age in the United States being around 51. As the ovaries stop releasing eggs and hormone levels drop, menstruation ceases permanently.

The 3 Stages of Menopause

Menopause occurs in stages and can span several years. Women often experience a variety of symptoms during this transitional period, which includes perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause.

Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause and can begin 8 to 10 years before menopause, typically in a woman’s 40s, though it may start earlier for some. During this stage, estrogen levels fluctuate and gradually decline, causing irregular menstrual cycles and various symptoms such as hot flashes, mood changes, and sleep disturbances. Although fertility decreases, pregnancy is still possible. Perimenopause usually lasts around 4 years but can vary from a few months to over a decade.

Menopause

Menopause is officially diagnosed when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, marking the end of ovarian egg release and a sharp drop in estrogen production. This phase signifies the end of natural fertility. Common symptoms at this stage include hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and mood changes.

Postmenopause

Postmenopause refers to the years following menopause. Menopausal symptoms often lessen during this stage, though some women may continue to experience them for years. The continued low levels of estrogen can increase the risk of health issues such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and urogenital atrophy. Hormone levels remain consistently low throughout this period.

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) refers to a group of physical and emotional symptoms that many women experience in the days leading up to their menstrual period. Common symptoms include mood swings, bloating, fatigue, irritability, and changes in appetite or sleep. The intensity of symptoms can vary from person to person and may significantly affect daily functioning for some individuals.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder affecting women of reproductive age. It is characterized by a combination of symptoms that may include irregular or absent menstrual periods, elevated levels of androgens (male hormones), and the presence of multiple small cysts on the ovaries, visible on ultrasound. PCOS can lead to a range of complications, including difficulty with ovulation and fertility, weight gain, acne, and increased hair growth on the face and body (hirsutism). It is also associated with insulin resistance, which can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic conditions.

Thyroid Optimization

Thyroid disorders—such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism—can have a profound impact on women's health. These conditions influence metabolism, energy levels, body weight, and overall wellness. Proper diagnosis and management are essential for restoring hormonal balance and improving quality of life.
